JOB DESCRIPTION
Personal Assistant
A LITTLE ABOUT MYSELF
I am a lady living in the Ely area of Cardiff. In January 2026, I returned home from hospital following treatment for pneumonia and sepsis after a series of falls. I now require oxygen continuously and use a portable supply whenever I move around. I use a Zimmer frame and need the support of two people for all transfers and mobility due to my limited ability to stand for extended periods. Although my mobility is restricted, I have regained good strength in my arms and am able to assist by pulling myself up in bed. I have a close and supportive family who provide assistance between my care calls. I am looking to build a small, regular team of Personal Assistants who can provide consistent support. Seeing familiar faces is very important to me, as I can become confused when care is delivered by lots of different people.
PURPOSE OF THE JOB
To support me safely and comfortably in my own home with my personal care, mobility and daily routines, whilst working alongside another Personal Assistant at each visit. The role will also include supporting me to access the community when I am well enough and it is safe to do so.
PLACE OF WORK
My home in the Ely area of Cardiff, and the local community.
HOURS OF WORK
I receive three care visits every day. All of my care is provided on a double-handed basis, meaning two Personal Assistants attend each call together. Daily Care Calls:
- Morning call: 9:00am for 45 minutes
- Lunch call: 1:00pm for 30 minutes
- Evening call: 7:00pm for 30 minutes
These visits total 24.5 hours per week, which will be shared across a small team of Personal Assistants. Additional flexibility may be required to provide holiday and sickness cover.
RATE OF PAY
£15.60 per hour
TASKS INVOLVED
- Supporting me to move safely around my home, including all transfers in and out of bed and to and from my chair, working as part of a two-person team.
- Assisting me to use my commode, which is located within my through-floor lift.
- Managing my oxygen supply in accordance with my care plan, ensuring it remains set at 2 litres and accompanies me whenever I move around the home to prevent any interruption to my oxygen therapy.
- Supporting me with my morning personal care, including washing and showering. Assisting me to access my upstairs shower using my lift. Helping me to dry and dress in clothing of my choice.
- Providing continence support, including changing pads, maintaining my dignity and comfort, and cleaning and emptying my commode.
- Preparing breakfast and lunch, and ensuring drinks and snacks are left within easy reach between visits.
- Monitoring my skin condition during personal care and reporting any concerns to my family and, where appropriate, relevant healthcare professionals.
- Ensuring I am safe, comfortable, and have everything I need within easy reach before leaving.
- Supporting me to access the community in my wheelchair, when I am well enough and it is safe to do so, such as enjoying trips to the beach or other local outings.
TYPE OF PERSON REQUIRED
- An understanding of, or willingness to learn about, my health needs, including the safe management of oxygen therapy.
- Patient, caring, kind and respectful in your approach.
- Reliable and punctual, as I depend on my care calls taking place at set times.
- Able to maintain confidentiality and respect my privacy at all times.
- Confident in working as part of a two-person care team and supporting safe moving and handling practices, or willing to undertake training.
- Willing to complete any necessary training, including oxygen awareness and moving and handling training where required.
- Committed to providing consistent support as part of a small, regular team, allowing me to develop trusting relationships with familiar faces.
ABOUT THE JOB
The post is subject to satisfactory references and a DBS (Police) Check - which will need to be carried out before employment can commence. The cost of this will be met by the employer (Local Authority). The relevant checks will be carried out to ensure any applicant has the right to work in the UK before you start work. Though a part-time job, this will be a proper job requiring a National Insurance number to be submitted. A probation period will be necessary in the first instance. Wages will be paid 4 weekly. You will receive 5.6 weeks paid holiday (pro rata). You will be required to apply for a DBS check at no expense to you. Support cannot be carried out in the personal assistant’s own home.
Please Note: Dewis Centre for Independent Living is acting on behalf of a third party and will not be your employer or be liable for any issues arising out of your employment should you be offered employment.
Thank you.
