Design Manager

Design Manager Location: Bedford, Bedfordshire, East of England Contract Type: Full-time, 2-year contract Industry: Construction A leading construction business is seeking an experienced Design Manager to join a major GBP500 million steel frame project based in Bedfordshire. This on-site, full-time contract role offers a unique opportunity to lead design activities on a high-profile project within the construction sector. Job Duties Manage and coordinate the design process across all disciplines, ensuring alignment with project objectives, timelines and budget.Lead the development, review and approval of design documentation related to steel frame structures.Collaborate closely with project managers, engineers, architects and subcontractors to resolve design issues and implement effective solutions.Ensure compliance with relevant building regulations, health and safety standards, and company policies throughout the design phase.Oversee design risk assessments and manage design changes proactively to mitigate potential impacts on the project.Facilitate design team meetings and maintain clear communication channels to support project delivery.Monitor and report on design progress, highlighting any deviations and recommending corrective actions.Support tender and procurement processes by providing accurate design input and technical expertise. Required Qualifications Degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architecture or a related discipline.Chartered status or working towards chartership with a recognised professional body is preferred. Experience At least five years experience managing design within the construction industry, specifically on steel frame projects (Commercial or Indsustrial NOT residential).Proven track record of working on large-scale construction projects, ideally exceeding GBP100 million in value.Experience managing high value projects and liaising with multiple stakeholders on complex projects. Knowledge and Skills Strong understanding of steel frame construction techniques, detailing and design principles.In-depth knowledge of UK building regulations, design codes, and health and safety standards.Excellent project management skills with the ability to prioritise and manage competing demands.Effective communication and interpersonal skills to engage with diverse teams and stakeholders.Proficiency in design software and tools relevant to steel frame structures.Problem-solving aptitude and attention to detail. Preferred Qualifications Experience with Building Information Modelling (BIM) and digital design tools.Previous involvement in projects utilising modern methods of construction. Working Conditions This role is based on-site in Bedfordshire and requires full-time attendance during standard working hours.Occasional extended hours may be necessary to meet project deadlines.The role involves working within an active construction environment, requiring adherence to strict health and safety protocols.Personal protective equipment will be provided and must be worn at all times on site.
