About the role
As a Disputes Senior Manager, you will support clients and the wider team on potential and ongoing disputes with HMRC. You will provide early legal and technical input, assess litigation risk across a range of matters and support proceedings before the Tax Tribunals, High Court, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court and European Court of Justice. The role combines case management, drafting, legal research and hearing preparation with close collaboration across KPMG and with external counsel. What you'll be doing:
- Provide early legal and technical input into potential disputes with HMRC, helping clients and colleagues understand litigation risk and possible next steps.
- Support litigation before the Tax Tribunals, High Court, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court and European Court of Justice.
- Manage group litigation cases and help ensure matters are progressed effectively.
- Prepare first drafts of pleadings, including notices of appeal and witness statements, as well as correspondence, advice and reports.
- Undertake legal research across relevant tax and litigation matters and build your knowledge of emerging tax technical issues.
- Prepare for hearings by compiling bundles of documents and authorities and providing wider litigation support.
- Draft instructions to counsel, attend conferences and prepare settled notes.
- Delegate appropriate work to junior colleagues and support their development.
- Build trusted relationships with clients and colleagues across KPMG and contribute to team and wider firm events. Relevant tax litigation experience gained in a comparable role within a law firm or Big Four practice, rather than solely general litigation experience.
- Experience across a range of taxes, particularly corporate and indirect taxes.
- A good understanding of procedure before the UK Tribunals.
- Experience of litigation and/or tax matters for commercial clients.
- Strong technical, drafting, organisational and relationship-building skills.
- The ability to get up to speed quickly on tax technical matters and work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary firm. The issues surrounding tax and legal services are constantly evolving, both locally and globally. Our Tax and Law experts are at the forefront of providing a range of specialist tax and legal knowledge and technologies to empower businesses. This is why you'll find KPMG the perfect place for you to build your expertise, progress your career and make your mark.
- In KPMG Law, we have a global legal network with more than 3,750 legal professionals, operating across more than 80 countries. Our lawyers have expertise across all key areas of law including corporate, commercial, data privacy, competition, employment, real estate, and tax law, as well as having best in-class capabilities in legal operations transformation, legal technology implementation, and managed services delivery. As part of our legal team, you'll benefit from our multi-disciplinary approach, working alongside KPMG's tax, consulting, and deal advisory professionals, to deliver rounded business-based solutions. About the team: The Legal Services team brings together corporate, commercial and employment law specialists alongside a market-leading tax litigation practice. We work collaboratively with specialists from across KPMG, combining legal, tax and wider business perspectives to respond to client needs and strengthen the firm's multidisciplinary legal services offering.
