The Role!
What is a Cover Supervisor?
A cover supervisor is responsible for supervising classes in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. Their primary role is to ensure that students remain engaged in learning activities while following the teacher's lesson plan. Cover supervisors do not usually teach new content or provide subject-specific expertise. Instead, they maintain order in the classroom, oversee the completion of work assigned by the absent teacher, and provide support where needed.
Do you need formal teaching qualifications?
- No! While you'll need strong communication and organizational skills, you don't necessarily need formal teaching qualifications to become a cover supervisor. This makes it an accessible entry point for those interested in working in education but not yet ready to commit to full-time teaching qualifications.
Why work as a Cover Supervisor?
Gain Experience in Education
- Teaching Experience: For those considering a career in teaching, working as a cover supervisor provides valuable experience in a school environment. It gives you the chance to learn how classrooms are managed and how to engage with students of various ages and abilities.
- Classroom Management Skills: Youll develop strong classroom management techniques, which are essential for anyone considering teaching or other roles working with young people.
Opportunity for Career Progression
- With experience, cover supervisors can move into more senior roles within schools, such as pastoral support, teaching assistant, or even school management roles, depending on their interests and further qualifications.
Experience, Training and Qualifications required for the Cover Supervisor position:
- Previous experience working with children or young people is desirable but not essential.
- Ideally hold a degree in a relevant subject area.
- A passion for working with children and young people.
- You will be proactive and adaptable, with lots of energy and enthusiasm.
