About the role
At Ground Control, we understand the value that Armed Forces personnel bring to civilian careers. If you've worked on heavy vehicles, military plant, engineering equipment, recovery assets, mechanical systems or fleet maintenance during your service, your skills could be a great fit for this role.
We're looking for an experienced Plant Fitter to join our Rail team, helping maintain and repair specialised Road Rail Vehicles (RRVs) and On-Track Plant (OTP) used to keep Britain's railway infrastructure operating safely and efficiently.
You do not need previous railway experience. If you have a strong engineering background, practical fault-finding skills, and experience maintaining heavy equipment, we can help you build the specialist rail knowledge required.
Based from our Nottinghamshire depot, you'll also travel to sites across the UK supporting maintenance and repair activities.
What You'll Be Doing
- Servicing, maintaining and repairing Road Rail Vehicles (RRVs) and other On-Track Plant (OTP) equipment.
- Diagnosing and rectifying faults on diesel engines, hydraulic systems and mechanical components.
- Conducting inspections and identifying defects to ensure safe and reliable operation.
- Completing planned preventative maintenance and responding to breakdowns when required.
- Ensuring all equipment complies with railway standards, safety legislation and company procedures.
- Supporting plant maintenance activities at locations across the UK.
- Working safely and taking pride in maintaining high-quality engineering standards.
Essential Skills & Experience
- NVQ qualification in Plant Maintenance or equivalent mechanical engineering qualification.
- Experience maintaining and repairing heavy plant, military engineering equipment, construction plant, agricultural machinery, vehicle fleets or similar machinery.
- Strong understanding of diesel engines, hydraulic systems and mechanical repairs.
- Excellent fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Willingness to travel nationwide as part of the role.
- Ability to attend our Nottinghamshire depot.
Desirable
- LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations).
- PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations).
- Experience using computerised diagnostic and fault-finding systems.
- Experience with GKD systems.
- Previous experience working on Road Rail Vehicles (RRVs) or railway plant equipment
- Competitive salary – aligned with your skills and experience
- Pension scheme – helping you plan for the future
- Recognition schemes – celebrating and rewarding great work
- Private GP service – fast, convenient access to medical support
- Life insurance – providing added peace of mind
- Subsidised gym membership – supporting your health and wellbeing
- Holiday buy scheme – purchase up to 5 additional days of annual leave
