Accounting Technician

We are an established accountancy practice based in Cheadle Hulme, Stockport, looking for an experienced Accounting Technician to join our team on a full-time basis.

The role involves working with a portfolio of smaller clients, including limited companies, sole traders and property landlords. You will be responsible for day-to-day bookkeeping, payroll, VAT preparation and dealing with routine client queries.

The role reports to the Practice Accountant.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain bookkeeping records for a range of small business clients, including limited companies, sole traders and property clients.
• Prepare rental income and expenditure statements for landlords.
• Prepare draft VAT returns, including checking and reconciling the underlying records, for review by the Practice Accountant.
• Process client payroll from start to finish using Moneysoft Payroll Manager.
• Prepare and submit CIS returns.
• Use accounting software including VT, Sage, Xero and QuickBooks.
• Deal with clients by phone and email, answering routine bookkeeping and payroll queries and resolving day-to-day issues.
• Identify any issues requiring further review and refer them to the Practice Accountant.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Experience: At least 3 years’ experience working in an accountancy practice, with hands-on experience of bookkeeping, VAT and payroll.
• Qualifications: AAT qualification is preferred. Candidates who are qualified by experience (QBE) and have a strong background in accountancy practice will also be considered.
• Communication: Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to deal confidently with clients and explain routine accounting matters clearly.
• Technical skills: Experience using VT Software and Moneysoft Payroll Manager is an advantage. Experience with Xero, QuickBooks and Sage is also preferred.
• Excel and Word: Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word.
• Accounting and tax knowledge: Good understanding of double-entry bookkeeping and general accounting procedures, including CIS, VAT for the construction industry, different VAT schemes and the VAT Cash Accounting Scheme.
