Location: Shell Baldock, A1 Junction 10, Baldock Road, Baldock, Hertfordshire SG7 5TR
Salary: £45000 to £56000 per annum.
Working Hours: 37.5
About the Role
Maksons Convenience Retail Ltd is seeking a commercially driven Business Development Manager to develop and deliver its growth strategy across at least two Shell-branded service stations incorporating multiple retail and food brands.
Reporting directly to the Retailer, you will identify new markets, secure commercial partnerships and develop initiatives that increase revenue, profitability and customer loyalty. Working closely with site managers, you will translate business objectives into measurable commercial plans and evaluate their results.
Your Responsibilities:
- Business development strategy: Develop and implement growth plans for each site, using market research, competitor analysis and customer insights to identify opportunities and set commercial priorities.
- New business acquisition: Build a pipeline of prospective business customers, including local employers, fleet operators and commercial organisations. Develop proposals, negotiate terms within agreed authority and secure new accounts.
- Commercial relationships: Develop existing business accounts and partnerships, identify opportunities to expand their value and monitor their contribution to revenue and profitability.
- Fuel and retail growth: Develop strategies to increase fuel volumes, fuel penetration and market share, alongside improving conversion from fuel purchases to shop, food and other on-site purchases.
- Shell Go+: Develop and evaluate initiatives to increase registrations, active usage and repeat visits, working with site managers to deliver agreed customer engagement targets.
- Customer performance: Lead improvement plans for customer satisfaction and “Treated Like a Guest” standards, analysing feedback, complaints and assessment results to improve customer retention and commercial performance.
- Multi-brand growth: Work with brand representatives and site managers to identify opportunities for joint promotions, local marketing and improvements to the product and service offering.
- Financial planning and analysis: Prepare sales forecasts, assess margins and evaluate the financial return of proposed promotions, partnerships and business development initiatives.
- KPI accountability: Agree commercial and customer performance targets with the Retailer, analyse results across the sites and lead reviews with site managers to address performance gaps.
- Waste and stock performance: Analyse waste, stock turnover, availability and losses. Develop commercially justified improvement plans and oversee their implementation through site managers.
- Recovery of unpaid monies: Oversee the review of outstanding payments and fuel non-payment incidents, identifying trends and coordinating recovery and escalation through approved procedures.
- Business cases and reporting: Present investment proposals and regular performance reports to the Retailer, with clear recommendations, financial implications and progress against agreed objectives.
Benefits & Perks
- Salary: £ £45000 to £56000 per annum.
- Immediate start available.
- An exciting opportunity to drive business growth within an established retail and wholesale distribution business.
- Opportunity to develop new business partnerships and commercial relationships.
- A key role working directly with Maksons' leadership to shape and deliver growth strategies.
What We're Looking For
- Proven experience in business development, commercial management or sales account management, ideally within fuel, convenience, food retail or a related sector.
- A track record of winning new business, developing commercial relationships and delivering measurable revenue growth.
- Experience developing and implementing business plans across multiple locations.
- Strong analytical and financial skills, including sales forecasting, margin analysis and evaluating commercial opportunities.
- Effective negotiation, presentation and stakeholder management skills.
- The ability to influence site managers, coordinate delivery and hold teams accountable for agreed actions.
- Strong commercial judgement, organisation and the ability to work independently within agreed authority.
- The ability to travel regularly between sites.
