About the role
Design Manager – Data Centre Construction
Location: West London
Sector: Data Centres / Mission-Critical Construction
The Opportunity
An established construction contractor is seeking an experienced Design Manager to join its growing data centre team on a major hyperscale development in West London.
The project involves the construction of a large-scale data centre campus comprising multiple data halls, supporting infrastructure, high-voltage electrical compounds and medium-voltage energy centres incorporating dual-backup generation.
This is an opportunity to take ownership of design delivery across a complex, technically demanding project, working from pre-construction through to completion.
The Role
As Design Manager, you will lead and coordinate the design process, ensuring that all design information is compliant, coordinated, buildable and delivered in line with programme, budget and quality requirements.
Key responsibilities include:
Managing the design process from pre-construction through to project completion.
Ensuring design compliance with employer’s requirements, contractual obligations and statutory regulations.
Developing and managing design programmes aligned with procurement and construction activities.
Coordinating consultants, designers, specialist subcontractors and internal project teams.
Managing design interfaces, resolving technical issues and overseeing clash detection.
Leading technical reviews, design approvals and design assurance processes.
Managing design risks, change control and technical queries.
Driving buildability, value engineering and cost optimisation.
Ensuring compliance with CDM, Building Regulations, health and safety and sustainability requirements.
Supporting construction teams with design-related queries and ensuring the production of as-built information and O&M documentation.
Building strong relationships with clients and project stakeholders while supporting and mentoring junior design team members.
About You
You will have a strong background in design management within the construction industry, ideally with experience delivering large-scale, complex projects.
You should demonstrate:
Experience managing design delivery across both pre-construction and construction phases.
Strong technical knowledge of construction and engineering principles.
Experience coordinating multidisciplinary design teams and specialist subcontractors.
An understanding of design programmes, technical reviews and approval processes.
Knowledge of Building Regulations, CDM and design risk management.
Experience in buildability reviews, value engineering and design optimisation.
The ability to manage competing priorities and engage confidently with project stakeholders.
Qualifications
Degree or equivalent experience in a relevant construction or engineering discipline.
Professional qualification or membership with RIBA, CIOB, ICE or an equivalent body would be advantageous.
CSCS card.
