About the role
Job title: Personal Assistant Hours: Variable, approx. 5 hours a week in the first instance, possibly rising in future Rate of pay: Age dependent, 21 years+ initially £12.71 an hour (or higher if self-employed). 56p per mile for car use. I am an active, young at heart, disabled woman living in a flat in the Cotham area of Bristol. I have two part-time jobs and do occasional work on a self-employed basis. My interests include environmental issues, acting, film-making and crafts, as well as helping people learn about the lives of people with learning disabilities. I am close to my family and friends, like eating healthy food, being involved in a drama group, having fun, being fairly busy but also having time to chill. I am easy going and have a good understanding of what is being discussed. I am looking for another supporter who will help me with the things I need to do to live on my own (eg plan meals, shop for food and household items, cook, budget, pay bills, sort out any IT and health issues, sometimes deal with formal letters, get any repairs done, keep my flat clean and tidy) and occasionally with social and leisure activities. This is usually likely to involve helping me in the day or evening during the week but occasionally I might like support at weekends, away or on short holidays if this is possible for you. I may also need help developing my self-employed work as a self-advocate giving disability advice. My Personal Assistant/s will be friendly, practical, reliable and flexible. They’ll be good communicators - able to listen well, summarise and explain key information clearly, be friendly and engaging on the phone. I need them to respect my privacy and support me to do as much as possible for myself, have a driving license and access to a car for use while working with me. I hope they cycle but do not smoke. (My flat is a non-smoking zone, I would not want a supporter to smoke in my company when we are out). Main Duties • Promote my independence in a friendly and safe way. • Help plan what I want to eat, make lists of ingredients and other essential shopping. • Help me learn to make more meals (including cooking meat) and support me with the tasks that my co-ordination makes difficult. • Help me manage my money (including best deals, paying bills and keeping track of budgets). • Help with domestic tasks (eg laundry, ironing and cleaning, simple plant care). • Support me to sort out difficulties with my mobile phone, laptop, printer and other everyday equipment. • Support me at appointments and on activities out of my flat such as on day–trips (possibly cycling beside me while I ride my trike), going to courses and events. • Help me to plan travel (eg safe routes, bus timings, booking taxis/trains). • Support me in my self-employment (as 3rd paragraph above) • Check with me how my week is going and offer support to problem solve. • Respect my privacy and issues of confidentiality. Supervision As my Personal Assistant you will be directed by, and accountable to, the members of my Independent Living Trust, made up of family members and close friends, who I call “my circle of support”. You should always ask my needs and listen to my instructions and requests, but you will be employed and supervised by my circle of support, who ask me how things are going. Employment will be dependent on a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, which will be paid for. Deadline for applications 30 November 2026, interview dates by arrangement
