Payroll Manager

Lichfield, Hybrid (3 Days Office / 2 Days WFH), £40,000 – £45,000 + Benefits

Are you an experienced Payroll professional looking for a standalone role where you can take full ownership of payroll operations? This is an excellent opportunity to join a well-established business and manage payroll across UK, US and maritime operations, ensuring accurate, compliant and timely payroll delivery for approximately 520 employees.
Reporting directly to the Financial Controller, you’ll work closely with HR, Finance and external payroll providers, taking responsibility for three distinct payrolls in a varied and hands-on position.
The Role

You’ll oversee:

UK Payroll: Approximately 480 employees across a multi-site retail network, head office and e-commerce operation, processed monthly via Sage 50 Payroll.
Maritime Payroll: Around 30 employees working onboard luxury cruise ships, managed through an external payroll bureau.
US Payroll: Small bi-weekly payroll of approximately 6 employees, processed through ADP.

Key responsibilities include:

Managing end-to-end payroll processing across all payrolls.
Ensuring compliance with payroll legislation and HMRC requirements.
Processing commission and variable pay calculations.
Managing payroll reconciliations, journals and balance sheet controls.
Liaising with external payroll providers and resolving payroll-related queries.
Supporting employees and managers with payroll matters.
Working collaboratively with HR and Finance to ensure payroll accuracy and efficiency.

About You

We’re interested in speaking with candidates who have:

Proven experience managing payrolls of 400+ employees.
Strong working knowledge of Sage 50 Payroll.
Thorough understanding of UK payroll legislation including PAYE, NIC, RTI, statutory payments and pension auto-enrolment.
Experience processing commissions and variable payments.
Payroll reconciliation and journal experience.
Advanced Excel skills including Lookups and Pivot Tables.
Excellent attention to detail and the ability to work autonomously.
Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.

Desirable Experience:

CIPP qualification, or studying towards AAT, ACCA or CIMA.
US payroll exposure and/or ADP experience.
International or maritime payroll knowledge.
Microsoft Dynamics Business Central experience.
Multi-site retail sector background.
Payroll or HR system implementation experience.
