About the role

About the Role

We are seeking a proactive and passionate Sustainability Adviser to support the delivery of more sustainable construction projects, helping to reduce environmental impact, improve energy efficiency and drive carbon reduction across the business.

Working closely with project teams, designers, engineers, clients, suppliers and local authorities, you will help develop and implement sustainability plans, ensure compliance with relevant standards and client requirements, and identify innovative solutions that deliver measurable environmental improvements.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a strong interest in sustainable construction who wants to make a tangible difference across projects while contributing to wider business sustainability objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Sustainability Planning: Develop and implement project-specific sustainability management plans aligned with business objectives, client expectations and regulatory requirements.
  • Energy and Carbon Management: Support energy management and carbon reduction initiatives, including compliance with ISO 50001, collecting energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions data, and monitoring progress against targets.
  • Environmental Performance: Work with site teams and supply chain partners to achieve sustainability objectives within agreed timescales.
  • Sustainable Design and Innovation: Collaborate with designers and engineers to identify opportunities for sustainable materials, lower-carbon construction methods, improved resource efficiency and innovative solutions.
  • Compliance and Stakeholder Engagement: Support project teams in meeting client, local authority and framework sustainability requirements.
  • Reporting and Communication: Prepare monthly sustainability performance reports and develop guidance, training materials, newsletters and other communications to raise awareness of sustainability issues and best practice.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve environmental performance, deliver value for money and share lessons learned through case studies and best-practice initiatives.
  • Supply Chain Engagement: Work with procurement and supply chain teams to improve sustainability performance and support business objectives.
  • Business Development: Contribute to pre-qualification questionnaires, tenders, bids and client interviews as required.

About You

You will have a good understanding of sustainability within the construction industry, alongside an interest in practical solutions that reduce carbon emissions and improve environmental performance.

You will ideally have:

  • A degree or relevant qualification in sustainability, environmental management or a related discipline.
  • Experience or knowledge of sustainability within construction, infrastructure or a related industry.
  • A good understanding of carbon reduction planning, energy management and greenhouse gas reporting.
  • An understanding of construction processes and the ability to work collaboratively with technical and operational teams.
  • Knowledge of ISO 50001 and relevant sustainability standards, or a willingness to develop this expertise.
  • Membership of IES (formerly IESF) or a similar relevant professional body, or a willingness to work towards professional membership.
  • Strong communication, organisational and reporting skills, with the ability to engage effectively with a range of stakeholders.

You will be proactive, accountable and solutions-focused, with a commitment to continuous improvement, innovation and sustainable construction practices.

Additional Information

The role may involve travel to other UK projects and sites for audits, training and sustainability support. This is not expected to exceed 40% of annual working time, and reasonable expenses will be covered.

Why Apply?

Join a team committed to improving the sustainability of construction projects, influencing better design and delivery decisions, and helping achieve meaningful carbon reduction targets. You will have the opportunity to develop your expertise, collaborate with industry professionals and contribute to a more sustainable built environment.
