About the role
Upper Secondary Teacher – SEND / SEMH
Location: Worthing, West SussexSalary: MPSStart date: January 2027Contract: Full-time teaching position
Are you a confident secondary teacher who is passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to learning?
Pink Tile Education is working with a small, welcoming and nurturing specialist school in Worthing that is looking for a dedicated Upper Secondary Teacher to support pupils with a range of Special Educational Needs (SEND) and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
This is an opportunity to join a supportive school where teaching is about more than delivering lessons. You’ll help young people develop their academic skills, rebuild their confidence and prepare for the next stage of their lives.
If you’re confident in your teaching, comfortable managing challenging behaviour and able to adapt your approach to meet individual needs, this could be an excellent opportunity for you.
About the school
The school is a specialist independent setting supporting pupils with a range of needs, including SEMH, ADHD, autism and dyslexia.
Many pupils have experienced challenges in previous educational settings and may have significant gaps in their learning. The school recognises that positive relationships, emotional wellbeing and a sense of belonging are essential to helping pupils engage with education.
Its approach is attachment-aware and trauma-informed, with a strong emphasis on emotional regulation, relationship-building and consistent, positive support.
Staff work together to provide an individualised education that supports pupils academically, socially and emotionally, helping them develop the skills and confidence they need for the future.
The role
As the Upper Secondary Teacher, you will deliver engaging and accessible lessons to pupils with a range of abilities and additional needs.
You’ll help pupils develop their subject knowledge, strengthen their core skills and work towards meaningful outcomes, adapting the curriculum to reflect their individual starting points and aspirations.
Your responsibilities will include:
Planning and delivering engaging lessons appropriate to upper secondary pupils.
Adapting teaching and learning to accommodate a range of SEND and SEMH needs.
Supporting pupils who may be working below age-related expectations or have gaps in their education.
Managing challenging behaviour confidently, calmly and consistently.
Establishing clear boundaries while maintaining positive, respectful relationships.
Using attachment-aware and trauma-informed approaches to support engagement and emotional regulation.
Assessing progress, providing constructive feedback and setting ambitious but achievable targets.
Supporting pupils to develop independence, resilience and confidence in their learning.
Contributing to EHCP annual reviews, individual risk assessments and positive behaviour plans.
Working collaboratively with teaching assistants, colleagues, families and other professionals.
Supporting pupils to develop practical skills and prepare for their next steps in education and beyond.
Who are we looking for?
We’re keen to hear from teachers who:
Are confident delivering lessons and managing a classroom.
Have experience teaching secondary-aged pupils.
Have experience supporting pupils with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
Are confident managing challenging behaviour and responding calmly to difficult situations.
Can adapt their teaching to meet a wide range of abilities and learning needs.
Have high expectations and are committed to helping every pupil achieve their potential.
Understand the importance of positive relationships, patience and consistency.
Are resilient, flexible and able to think creatively when pupils find learning challenging.
Can work effectively within a team while taking responsibility for their own classroom.
Are willing to undertake specialist training, including PRICE de-escalation and physical intervention training where required.
Experience in a specialist SEND school, SEMH setting or alternative provision would be particularly beneficial.
What’s on offer?
The opportunity to teach in a small, nurturing specialist school.
A welcoming and supportive team.
Comprehensive training and ongoing professional development.
Regular supervision and employee wellbeing support.
A free lunch.
The opportunity to make a genuine difference to young people who need the right support to thrive.
