About the role

Title: PMLD Teaching Assistant

The Role

As a PMLD Assistant, you will work closely with young people with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD) and a range of complex needs. You will provide both educational and personal support throughout the school day, working as part of a wider multidisciplinary team to ensure every learner receives the appropriate care and encouragement.

You will need to be comfortable providing personal care and supporting learners with their individual care needs, whilst always maintaining their dignity, privacy and independence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support to learners with complex and profound needs.
  • Assist with personal care, hygiene and toileting where required.
  • Follow appropriate procedures when supporting students with medical needs.
  • Encourage learners to participate in classroom activities and wider school life.
  • Work closely with teachers, support staff and other professionals to provide consistent care.
  • Follow individual support, healthcare and behaviour plans.
  • Attend relevant training and regularly update knowledge and skills to ensure the highest standard of support is provided.

    • Requirements

  • Experience supporting individuals with physical, learning and/or medical needs.
  • Previous experience within an SEN, PMLD, healthcare, care, childcare or adult support setting.
  • Confidence supporting personal care, including hygiene and toileting.
  • A willingness to undertake relevant training and develop your skills.
  • The ability to remain calm, patient and supportive in challenging or unpredictable situations.
  • A genuine commitment to promoting the well-being, dignity and independence of learners.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a wider support team.
  • Level 2 English and maths (GCSE grade 4/C or Functional Skills).
  • Prior experience in Teaching Assistant Role or a Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification.
  • Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is mandatory. (We can help advise on this)
