About the role
We have an enviable client base, from NHS providers and commissioners to private healthcare providers and care homes, regulators and local authorities. The team as a whole cover inquests, general healthcare advice, Court of Protection applications, Mental Health Tribunals and other regulatory challenges, including advising on and defending prosecutions by Care Quality Commission and providing advice on a wide range of other health and care issues such as consent and confidentiality, capacity and best interests and discharge processes. Individuals in the team may focus on some of these issues, or deal with many or all of them. We are always keen to add to the team in the same way, with some focussed on inquests, some on advisory work, and some doing a mix.
We welcome applications nationally, and some travel may be required. With our diverse offering, there may be both the scope and need for our lawyers to be involved in work for clients outside of their core caseload, including on secondments.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Manage a caseload of files.
- For inquest advocates - Attend Inquest hearings at court, including travel, and advocacy at pre-inquest review hearings and inquests.
- For advisory work – dealing with a mixed caseload, likely to include Court of Protection work and general healthcare advisory / regulatory work, for a mix of providers and commissioners, working with clients nationwide
- Meetings with clients and witnesses in preparation.
- Work in accordance with Weightmans’ values
