About the role
STO Coordinator
Location: Stockton-on-Tees, Co Durham
Contract Type: Contract or Temp
Closing Date: Nov 14th, 2026
Ref: 1743988
Wolviston Management Services have partnered with Conoco Phillips to recruit a Shutdown Turnaround Outage Coordinator on a 2 year FTC basis (with possibility of extension) at their Teesside Operations - Norsea Terminal.Purpose of the Role
The STO Coordinator will take end-to-end ownership of assigned shutdown, turnaround and outage (STO) events, from initial concept and scope definition through planning, scheduling, execution and formal close-out.
This appointment replaces a departing team member and is an important addition to the team, with a particular focus on improving planning quality, execution readiness, delivery performance and cost control.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively across Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Projects, Health, Safety and Environment (HSE), Supply Chain and contractors to ensure shutdown activities are properly scoped, resourced, planned and delivered safely, on time and within budget.
The role requires someone who can bring people together, challenge existing approaches constructively, manage competing priorities and maintain accountability for delivery. Although project management experience is valuable, this is not a traditional Project Manager role. The emphasis is on coordinating and driving the delivery of shutdown and turnaround events through effective planning, stakeholder management and execution control.
The Ideal Candidate - Key Characteristics
The preferred candidate is an experienced, driven and proactive engineering professional who can take ownership of an event and get the best out of the people around them.
The ideal person will demonstrate:
- End-to-end ownership: Takes responsibility for moving an event from concept through to successful delivery and close-out.
- Drive and determination: Is hungry to deliver improvements, takes initiative and maintains momentum.
- Excellent communication: Can bring together different disciplines, influence stakeholders and communicate clearly with the team and management.
- Strong people skills: Builds relationships, works well within a diverse team and can coordinate people without relying solely on formal authority.
- Planning and readiness expertise: Understands what good preparation looks like and can identify gaps before they affect execution.
- Commercial awareness: Understands budgets, planned hours, resources, cost pressures and the importance of delivering within agreed financial parameters.
- Practical problem-solving: Can identify bottlenecks, challenge established ways of working and find better approaches.
- Prioritisation: Makes sound decisions when resources are shared across competing shutdown, maintenance and project requirements.
- Accountability: Does not simply report problems; takes ownership of actions, follows up and escalates issues at the right time.
- Positive attitude: Encourages collaboration, maintains focus under pressure and helps the wider team work towards common objectives.
Relevant Industry and Technical Experience
Candidates should ideally demonstrate:
- Relevant experience in shutdowns, turnarounds, outages, maintenance, projects or construction within a regulated industrial environment.
- Direct involvement in the planning and delivery of shutdown or turnaround activities.
- Experience coordinating multiple disciplines, contractors, work scopes and competing priorities.
- An understanding of the full event lifecycle, including scope development, planning, scheduling, execution and close-out.
- Experience working with cost, schedule, resource and readiness information to support delivery decisions.
- The confidence to challenge scope, planned hours, resource requirements and execution methods constructively.
A mechanical or fabrication background would be particularly attractive, given the practical nature of the role and the need to coordinate maintenance and shutdown activities.
Relevant backgrounds could include:
- Mechanical maintenance and engineering.
- Fabrication and construction.
- Industrial shutdown and turnaround delivery.
- Maintenance planning and work preparation.
- Engineering projects and contractor management.
The candidate must understand how the different stages of an event fit together and how to maintain accountability throughout.
Concept and scope development
- Establish and develop the required work scope.
- Coordinate input from the relevant engineering and operational disciplines.
- Challenge scope where appropriate to ensure work is necessary, deliverable and properly defined.
- Ensure the scope is sufficiently mature to progress into detailed planning.
- Take ownership of progressing the event rather than waiting for others to drive it.
- Coordinate the end-to-end planning phase.
- Ensure work packs, resources, materials, services and interfaces are properly considered.
- Use SAP to develop and manage the scope and associated planning information.
- Identify gaps in readiness and ensure actions are assigned and followed through.
- Coordinate shared resources and resolve competing demands.
- Maintain alignment between the work scope, schedule, resource requirements and delivery expectations.
- Work with the cost engineer to develop the event budget.
- Understand the work to be undertaken, the required resources and the anticipated cost.
- Challenge planned hours and resource assumptions where appropriate.
- Ensure the schedule is realistic and aligned with the available resources.
- Identify cost or schedule risks early enough for corrective action to be taken.
- Act as the central coordination point during execution.
- Maintain oversight of progress against the agreed scope, schedule, budget and quality requirements.
- Identify bottlenecks, emerging issues, resource conflicts and cost pressures.
- Keep Jonny informed of progress, risks, constraints and any issues requiring intervention.
- Coordinate recovery actions and reprioritise work when necessary.
- Ensure emergent work and scope changes follow the approved control process.
- Maintain accountability for delivery rather than relying on progress reporting alone.
- Coordinate completion and handover activities.
- Confirm that work has been completed to the required standard.
- Support reconciliation of actual performance against the agreed schedule and budget.
- Ensure lessons learned are captured and used to improve future events.
- Identify opportunities to improve planning, readiness, execution and cost performance.
SAP experience is desirable but not an absolute requirement at the recruitment stage. However, it is a key consideration because the successful candidate will need to use SAP as part of the role.
