This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on Control Systems Engineer with strong Siemens PCS7 and S7 PLC experience, combining control system design, fault-finding and process optimisation with the delivery of capital projects and ongoing plant improvements.
The Role
As Control Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for developing, maintaining and improving industrial control systems to support safe and efficient manufacturing operations.
You will work closely with engineering, maintenance and production teams to troubleshoot complex control system issues, optimise batch manufacturing processes and support the successful delivery of engineering projects.
The position also involves contributing to process safety, functional safety and regulatory compliance within a demanding chemical manufacturing environment.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Designing, developing and maintaining control systems using Siemens PCS7 and S7 PLCs
- Troubleshooting complex control system faults to minimise downtime and maintain production efficiency
- Developing and implementing control strategies for new and existing batch manufacturing processes
- Supporting the delivery of capital projects, including system testing, commissioning and start-up activities
- Working closely with engineering, maintenance and production teams to improve process control and operational performance
- Providing technical support and guidance to engineers, maintenance technicians and plant operators
- Participating in HAZOP studies, LOPA assessments and process safety reviews
- Developing and maintaining safety-related control programming in accordance with IEC 61511
- Implementing OT cybersecurity measures in line with IEC 62443
- Managing alarm systems in accordance with IEC 62682 to support effective operator response
- Preparing and maintaining technical documentation, including control narratives, User Requirement Specifications (URS) and Functional Design Specifications (FDS)
- Ensuring compliance with COMAH regulations and relevant engineering and safety standards
- Supporting continuous improvement initiatives across control systems and manufacturing operations
We are looking for an experienced Control Systems Engineer with a strong background in industrial automation, process control and manufacturing operations, ideally gained within the chemical, petrochemical or similarly regulated process industries.
Ideally, you will have:
- An HNC, HND, Degree or relevant apprenticeship in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, Instrumentation or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience
- Extensive hands-on experience with Siemens PCS7 and S7 PLC systems
- Proven experience designing, developing, commissioning and maintaining industrial control systems
- A strong understanding of process control and batch manufacturing operations
- Experience troubleshooting complex automation and control system faults within an operational manufacturing environment
- Good knowledge of COMAH regulations and industrial process safety standards
- An understanding of functional safety, OT cybersecurity and alarm management principles
- Experience contributing to engineering projects, commissioning activities and process improvements
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with sound engineering judgement
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary engineering and production teams
- The ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and deliver practical engineering solutions
The Opportunity
This position offers the opportunity to take ownership of control systems engineering activities within an established chemical manufacturing environment, working across plant reliability, process optimisation, functional safety and capital project delivery.
The role provides a varied combination of hands-on technical engineering and project involvement, with the opportunity to contribute directly to the safety, efficiency and ongoing development of manufacturing operations.
