Leading the Creative Direction

An Art Director within a creative agency has key responsibility for the style and theme of a client’s creative campaigns. They help decide and drive the overall design to ensure the right style, messaging and mood for the project.

Art Directors generally work in a creative team alongside a Copywriter, coming together to develop ideas and campaigns. As one of the most important creative roles within an agency, they help shape the visual aspects of a brief before it is passed to the wider design team.

For example, if a client requires a photoshoot, the Art Director may determine the style, layout and colour scheme, as well as commission a photographer who is suited to the project.

Art Directors are creative in the true sense of the role and often help define the artistic direction an agency provides. They are also required to build strong relationships with clients and, when campaigns are successful, can play an important part in developing long-term agency and client relationships.
