About the role

Mechanical Engineer – Bogie Systems (Wheels)

We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Engineer to provide specialist mechanical engineering expertise across bogie systems and wheelset-related projects.

This is an excellent opportunity for a technically strong engineer with experience in mechanical systems, ideally within the rail, bogie or wheelset engineering sector, to take ownership of engineering activities from specification and design through to testing, maintenance and failure investigation.

You will work closely with internal teams, customers and suppliers to deliver high-quality engineering solutions, while supporting project delivery, technical documentation and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide mechanical engineering expertise across a range of engineering projects and activities.
  • Produce, review and approve technical documentation and engineering drawings, including:
    • Engineering calculations
    • Technical specifications and reports
    • Drawings and Engineering Bills of Materials (EBoMs)
    • Engineering Change Orders (ECOs)
    • Maintenance manuals
    • Technical bulletins and instructions
    • Production queries and work instructions
    • Technical queries and wheelset data sheets
  • Ensure engineering tasks and deliverables are completed within agreed timescales.
  • Support tendering activities by providing appropriate engineering input.
  • Liaise with internal and external customers regarding project progress, technical matters and engineering issues.
  • Develop and maintain engineering project plans to monitor and track deliverables.
  • Coordinate external engineering resources when required to support workload peaks and ensure projects remain on schedule.
  • Maintain engineering resource forecasts.
  • Apply relevant business processes, procedures and engineering standards.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to your skills, training and experience.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent qualification.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a mechanical engineering discipline.
  • Experience in bogies, wheelsets or rail engineering would be highly desirable.
  • Experience of managing engineering projects and deliverables.
  • Proven experience in the specification, design, testing, maintenance and failure investigation of mechanical systems and components.
  • Experience using Mechanical CAD systems.
  • Experience of working within a production or shop-floor environment.

Key Skills & Attributes

  • Positive, self-motivated and proactive approach.
  • Strong sense of ownership and commitment to delivering engineering tasks to a high standard.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision and make sound technical decisions.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain and present technical issues clearly and concisely.
  • Good working knowledge of standard office applications, including Microsoft Office.
  • Strong organisational and project management skills.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues, customers and suppliers.
  • Willingness to work at off-site locations, including supplier and customer sites, where required to support project delivery and product performance and reliability.

This role offers the chance to apply your mechanical engineering expertise to complex bogie and wheelset systems, working across design, engineering, production and project delivery. You will have the opportunity to work with a range of internal and external stakeholders and contribute directly to the performance, reliability and quality of engineering solutions.

If you are an experienced Mechanical Engineer looking for a technically challenging role within the rail engineering sector, we would be keen to hear from you.
