What is the job role?

Coventry City Council Parks and Open Spaces are looking for a Senior Urban Ranger to lead the team of 7 that form the Urban Ranger Team and the Amenities Team.

The Urban Rangers are an important part of our service, performing essential duties throughout the year to help maintain and develop the city’s green spaces. They are our ‘front-facing’ service and have a busy and varied workload.

Reporting to the Commercial and Visitor Experience Manager, the successful applicant will join a small team to work closely with volunteers, community groups and members of the public. Dealing with a variety of stakeholders is an important part of the role. This will include advising and supporting in the practical management of their local park, woodland or other green space.

The teams are required to work outdoors throughout the year and on rough terrain or even occasionally in rivers and ponds. Appropriate training will be provided as necessary.

A uniform and appropriate PPE will be provided.

The post requires working some anti-social hours including occasional weekend and evening work for which an additional increment on the standard salary will apply.

The Senior Urban Ranger will also participate in the weekend Duty Manager rota at Coombe Country Park.

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

All candidates must have the Right to Work in the UK. We are currently not offering sponsorship for this role.

Who are we looking for?

You will need to have experience of managing a service delivery team or have experience in leading a team in a practical setting.

You will need to have practical skills and experience for example in horticulture, arboriculture, agriculture, grounds maintenance or nature conservation. You will have an excellent awareness and understanding of health and safety in the workplace.

You will need to be enthusiastic, diplomatic and have previous experience in working with the public.

You will be happy to work with all people regardless of culture, background or gender.

You will have prior experience of working with children and vulnerable adults (for which we will require you to have an enhanced DBS check).

You will have a full, clean UK driving license and we especially welcome anyone who is both qualified and has experience in driving Category BE vehicles.

Our workforce data shows that people from minority and ethnic backgrounds are under-represented in green space management and we encourage applicants from these backgrounds to apply.

We have policies and procedures in place to ensure that all applicants are treated fairly and consistently at every stage of the recruitment process, including the consideration of reasonable adjustments for people who have a disability.
