About the Role

We are seeking a Protection & Control Application Engineer to support programming, testing, and commissioning of protection and control panels for generator, transformer, feeder, bus, and transmission line protection systems.

The role will be 100% remote until the site becomes active, with a transition to 4 days/week onsite in Salt Lake City around mid-2027. Candidates must be local enough to support the onsite requirement.

Travel: 50% domestic once the site is live, with travel potentially reaching 70–80% during the first year while working remotely. Some travel to Canada may be required.

Responsibilities

• Program, test, and commission protection and control systems.
• Analyze customer specifications, single-line diagrams, schematics, logic diagrams, wiring drawings, and BOMs.
• Create relay setting files based on protection studies and control logic.
• Program GE Multilin relays and configure communications, including IEC 61850.
• Develop and execute factory and site test procedures.
• Perform secondary injection testing and simulate complex protection and control schemes.
• Test customized protection and control solutions in-house and at customer sites.
• Provide field support through commissioning.
• Support and mentor other engineers and team members.

Requirements

• University degree or college diploma in Electrical Engineering or related field.
• 7+ years of experience in relay testing and creation of settings files for multifunction relays.
• Strong knowledge of power systems, protection schemes, and communications.
• Experience developing test procedures for factory and site testing/commissioning.
• Hands-on experience programming GE Multilin UR-series relays.
• Strong understanding of protection principles, including:
• Distance protection
• Line differential
• Transformer differential
• Bus protection
• Feeder protection
• Generator protection
• Large motor protection
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Preferred

• Experience with turnkey Protection & Control projects.
• Experience with major relay test sets and protection/coordination software.
• Experience with RTDS, ASPEN, EMTP, SKM, ETAP, or MATLAB.
• Experience with substation automation, metering, communications, and integration.
• Experience with GE Digital Energy and third-party protection relays.
• P.Eng. certification is an asset.
• Lean/Six Sigma certification is a plus.
