City of London, London Calibre Search Senior Structural Engineer Central London There are plenty of Structural Engineering roles in London. This one is a little different. I'm working with a major multidisciplinary Engineering Consultancy that is looking to strengthen its London Structures team with a Senior Structural Engineer, with much of the workload centred around secure, technically demanding projects for the MOD, Ministry of Justice and wider public-sector estate. It means the work tends to be considerably more involved than simply designing another commercial office or residential scheme. Projects can include new-build facilities, upgrades and extensions to existing assets, refurbishment, structural assessment and investigation, strengthening works and the adaptation of buildings where security, resilience, buildability and the constraints of an operational site all need to be considered alongside the structural design itself. The Consultancy has a long-established presence across defence, government and critical infrastructure, so you'll be joining a team with an existing workload rather than being brought in to create one from scratch. What will you actually be doing? As a Senior Structural Engineer, you'll take projects and packages from initial assessment and feasibility through to detailed design and construction support. You'll be involved in structural analysis and design across steel, reinforced concrete, masonry and timber, but the role goes considerably further than calculations alone. A lot of these projects involve existing and sometimes complex buildings, so you could be reviewing historic information, assessing existing structures, attending surveys and inspections, developing strengthening or refurbishment solutions and working out how new interventions can be introduced safely into an existing asset. You'll produce and review calculations, specifications, technical reports and design information, coordinate with Revit Technicians and other Engineers and work closely with Architects, MEP teams and specialists from across the wider business. You'll also have increasing involvement with clients, design meetings, technical decision-making and the mentoring of more junior Engineers as you develop within the team. Because of the nature of the MOD and MoJ workload, projects can come with additional requirements around security, information management, access and confidentiality. Previous defence, secure estate or government experience would therefore be useful, but it isn't essential if you have the right technical background and are eligible to obtain the necessary UK security clearance. The technical side They're looking for somebody who has built a solid grounding in UK building structures and is comfortable taking responsibility for their own design work. You'll ideally bring: Good experience within a UK Structural Engineering Consultancy. Strong structural analysis and design capability across several common building materials. Experience working with existing structures, refurbishment, structural assessments or technically constrained projects would be particularly useful. Exposure to software such as Tekla Structural Designer, TEDDS, Robot, SCIA, Revit or AutoCAD. An understanding of BIM and multidisciplinary design coordination. A degree in Civil or Structural Engineering. Progress towards Chartered status, or CEng/IEng already achieved. The ability to communicate clearly with clients, other disciplines and members of the project team. Eligibility to obtain UK security clearance due to the nature of the project portfolio.Previous experience within defence, custodial, government, nuclear, aviation or other secure/regulated environments would transfer particularly well, although it isn't a prerequisite. There is a clear route to take on greater technical and project responsibility as you progress, whether your longer-term ambitions sit around Chartership, technical leadership, project delivery or eventually moving towards Principal level. The office is also in Central London, within easy walking distance of Liverpool Street Station, making it particularly accessible from both across London and the surrounding commuter network.
