The Maritime and Coastguard Agency implement's the government’s maritime safety policy in the UK and works to prevent the loss of life on the coast and at sea. Within Finance and Analysis, the Data Engineering function develops analytical data products that enable reporting, analysis and decision-making across MCA.

Job description

As Senior Analytics Engineer, you will lead the design, development and support of reusable analytical data products, models and curated datasets. Working between business users, analysts, data scientists and data engineers, you will translate business needs into trusted, secure and maintainable data assets that support reporting, analysis and decision-making across MCA.

Your responsibilities will include, but aren’t limited to:

• Design, build, review, test, deploy and maintain secure analytical data products, curated datasets, transformation pipelines and complex analytical data models.
• Identify opportunities to reuse existing data products, datasets, models and transformation components before developing new solutions.
• Profile source systems, analyse data structures and translate business processes, rules and user needs into reusable data designs.
• Ensure analytical products meet agreed quality standards and are tested, version-controlled, documented and deployed in line with MCA standards.
• Build effective relationships with the wider data team, subject matter experts and senior stakeholders, explaining technical issues clearly.

Person specification

Required experience:

To be successful in this role you will need to have the following experience:

• Demonstrable hands-on experience of designing, building and reviewing complex analytical data models and transformation pipelines using SQL and Python/PySpark.
• Experience of data profiling, source-system analysis, dimensional or conformed modelling, data quality controls, automated testing, metadata and documentation.
• Ability to translate complex business problems and stakeholder needs into clear data requirements, models and reusable analytical products.

Working hours, office attendance and travel requirements

Full time roles consist of 37 hours per week.

Whilst we welcome applications from those looking to work with us on a part-time basis, there is a business requirement for the successful candidate to be able to work at least 30 hours per week.

This role is suitable for hybrid working, which is a non-contractual arrangement where a combination of workplace and home-based working can be accommodated subject to business requirements.

The expectation at present is a minimum of 60% of your working time a month will be spent at either your designated workplace (one of the locations cited in the advert) or, when required for business reasons, in another office/work location/visiting stakeholders. Your designated workplace will be your contractual place of work. There may be occasions where you are required to attend above the minimum expectation.

Occasional travel to other MCA, DfT, supplier or stakeholder locations may be required, which may involve overnight stays
