Guaranteed basic salary: £38,510 - £41,177 per annum (dependant on previous experience)On Target Earnings of £42,000, to be made up of standby, call out and bank holiday working. Additional payments

Looking to earn more than the basic salary? As an HGV Technician, you will have opportunities to increase your earnings through:

• Standby/on-call rota: A minimum of 36 standby shifts per year, paid at £34.50 per shift.
• Call-out overtime: Paid at time and a quarter, or double time on bank holidays.
• Additional overtime: Overtime outside standby and call-outs may also be available, depending on service requirements, and is paid at time and a quarter.

Participation in the out-of-hours standby rota is a requirement of the role.

The opportunity

As an HGV Technician, you’ll join a friendly, professional and highly skilled workshop team responsible for keeping the Council’s essential fleet safe, compliant, reliable and available for service.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Inspecting, servicing, maintaining and repairing heavy goods vehicles and associated equipment.
• Carrying out planned preventative maintenance and vehicle safety inspections.
• Diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, electronic, pneumatic and hydraulic faults.
• Preparing vehicles for DVSA annual tests and completing any necessary repairs.
• Accurately completing inspection, maintenance and repair documentation.
• Maintaining high standards of workmanship, health and safety, compliance and vehicle safety.
• Helping to ensure the Council’s essential fleet remains safe, reliable and available to support frontline services.
• Participating in the out-of-hours standby and call-out rota.

About you

To be successful in this role, you’ll have:

• A Level 3 qualification in heavy vehicle maintenance and repair, such as City & Guilds, NVQ or an equivalent recognised qualification.
• Relevant experience of maintaining and repairing heavy goods vehicles.
• Strong diagnostic and fault-finding skills.
• A good understanding of commercial vehicle safety inspections, preventative maintenance and preparation for DVSA annual tests.
• A positive attitude and a commitment to delivering safe, high-quality workmanship.
• The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
• A willingness to participate in the out-of-hours standby rota.

Experience of working on specialist vehicles such as refuse collection vehicles and road sweepers would be advantageous, but it isn’t essential because appropriate training can be provided.

Ideally, you’ll hold a Category C driving licence and Driver Certificate of Professional Competence. However, we can provide the necessary training to help the successful candidate obtain these.
