Morson Edge is recruiting for an experienced Legal Counsel to join a growing organisation operating within the UK carbon capture and storage (CCS) and energy transition sector.

This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified legal professional to provide commercially focused legal advice across a broad range of matters, supporting major CCS development activities, regulated operations, infrastructure projects, commercial arrangements and strategic transactions.

The Role

As Legal Counsel, you will provide high-quality, proactive legal support across the development and operation of major CCS activities in the UK.

You will work closely with internal stakeholders, project teams, commercial functions, regulators, partners and external advisers, providing practical legal advice across areas including:

• CCS project development and regulated entity activities.

• Commercial, regulatory, energy and environmental matters.

• Construction and engineering agreements, including EPC contracts.

• Real estate, planning and consenting agreements.

• Agreements with government bodies, CO₂ emitters, partners and other stakeholders.

• Financing, investment, acquisition and divestment activities.

• Decommissioning security arrangements and intra-group agreements.

• Confidentiality, transfer and novation agreements.

• Regulatory compliance and governance.

• Company secretarial matters.

• Dispute resolution, including litigation, arbitration, mediation and expert determination.

• English law advice across relevant UK CCS activities.

• Development and maintenance of effective legal and document management systems.

You will also support internal compliance with company policies, procedures and applicable legal and regulatory requirements, including areas such as anti-corruption, claims reporting, health and safety/environmental compliance and corporate governance.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide commercially minded legal advice across a diverse portfolio of projects and business activities.

• Draft, review and negotiate complex commercial and project agreements.

• Work collaboratively with project, engineering, finance, commercial and operational teams.

• Support major infrastructure, financing, investment and transactional activities.

• Advise on regulatory and compliance requirements affecting CCS operations.

• Engage effectively with external counsel, regulators, contractors, partners and other stakeholders.

• Support dispute resolution matters where required.

• Contribute to effective legal governance, risk management and information management.

• Ensure legal activities are delivered in accordance with relevant internal policies and professional standards.

About You

We are looking for a qualified legal professional with strong commercial awareness and experience working on complex projects or within regulated industries.

You will ideally have:

• A Law degree with strong academic results.

• Qualification as a Solicitor, Barrister or equivalent.

• Relevant experience within one or more of the following:

  • UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) oil & gas.

  • Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).

  • Renewable energy development.

  • Major infrastructure projects.

• Strong knowledge of relevant areas of commercial, regulatory, energy and/or environmental law.

• Experience drafting, reviewing and negotiating complex agreements.

• Strong analytical, drafting and negotiation skills.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• The ability to work effectively with stakeholders at all levels.

• Strong commercial judgement and a pragmatic approach to legal advice.

• Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

• Fluent English.

Experience in the energy transition, decarbonisation or low-carbon infrastructure sector would be highly advantageous. Knowledge of an additional language would also be beneficial.
