As the authority for the Royal Navy’s nuclear submarine capability, the Submarine Directorate oversees one of the most complex and critical elements of UK defence. Covering everything from in‑service management to long‑term fleet modernisation, the directorate ensures the Submarine Flotilla remains safe, reliable, and ready to meet national security requirements.

In the Clyde Transformation Programme (CTP) military, civil servants and industry partners work together to build new facilities and refurbishments to existing facilities to support current and future operations on His Majesty’s Naval Base (HMNB) Clyde. A contingent docking capability is required in the event of DREADNOUGHT (DRNT) needing to conduct an unplanned docking from the point of Barrow exit until the first nuclear use of the first Project Euston floating dock at HMNB Clyde. The location of the contingent docking facility (CDF) is at Royal Rosyth Dockyard Limited.

You’ll be based at either Kentigern House, Glasgow or HMS Caledonia, Rosyth. This role will require you to occasionally travel HMS Caledonia if based in Glasgow to support programme delivery, stakeholder engagement, and key activities across the wider organisation.

Nationality, visas, and vetting: For security reasons this role is open to sole UK nationals only. A ‘sole UK national’ refers to an individual who holds citizenship solely in the UK, without dual citizenship or nationality from another country.

Job description

We're looking for a Project Manager to help deliver the Contingent Docking Facility (CDF), a complex and high-profile project within the Clyde Transformation Programme. This is an exciting opportunity to lead important work, ensuring activity is delivered on time, within budget and to the required quality standards.

You'll work closely with the Programme Manager, providing support across a range of activities and deputising when required. You'll play a key role in bringing people together, managing delivery, and ensuring project activity remains on track to achieve its objectives.

As a Project Manager, you'll lead the day-to-day delivery of projects from planning through to completion. You'll develop project plans, monitor progress, manage risks and issues, and ensure that project objectives are achieved.

You'll build strong relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, understanding their requirements and helping to turn these into practical and deliverable plans. You'll work collaboratively with colleagues, project teams and specialists to coordinate activities, manage dependencies and support successful outcomes.

You'll also oversee project budgets and resources, ensuring that funding and people are used effectively. This includes monitoring costs, forecasting spend and identifying future resource requirements.

The role will involve supporting governance and assurance activities, preparing reports, coordinating decision-making processes and ensuring that project information is accurate and up to date. You'll help manage change requests, maintain project controls and contribute to effective risk management across the wider portfolio.

In addition, you'll provide leadership and support to team members, helping to create a positive and collaborative working environment while promoting continuous improvement and professional development.

This role requires regular onsite attendance (around 60% of the working week) to benefit from face-to-face collaboration, while offering flexibility of hours to support work life balance and business needs. During the initial period, you may be asked to attend more frequently to get familiar with the site, team, and responsibilities.

Person specification

To be successful with your application, you’ll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:

Essential Criteria

• Experience successfully delivering medium to large-scale projects in a complex environment, balancing priorities, resources, budgets and timescales to achieve agreed outcomes.
• Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build productive relationships, influence decision-making and work effectively with a wide range of internal and external partners.
• Experience managing commercial relationships
• Proven ability to manage suppliers to deliver projects.

Desirable Criteria

• Experience delivering projects within an infrastructure, construction or major capital works environment.
• A broad understanding of disciplines such as infrastructure, construction, engineering, safety, environmental management or other highly regulated sectors.
