Overview of the job

This job description is only to be used in establishments operating Working Week workshops. The Working Week Project is a core component of our approach to deliver on the manifesto commitment to improve access to purposeful activity and get more prisoners into employment on release. It aims to prototype an increased working week in industry and commercial workshops. The job holder will be responsible for providing supervision, knowledge and skills to prisoners in a Working Week commercial workshop so they can improve their employment prospects on release with a view to reducing reoffending. The overall aims of the Working Week Project are to:

• Increase revenue from commercial work in prison industries or generating savings by producing more goods and service in-house and reinvest this back into prisons and purposeful activity.

Summary

The jobholder will be responsible for delivering training to prisoners that supports the achievement of nationally recognised qualifications and sector-specific skills, as defined by the commercial partner. They will provide instruction and supervision in commercial workshops, ensuring that production meets the high standards expected. Operating at a level equivalent to a skilled or specialist employee in the community, the jobholder will deliver both accredited and non-accredited learning to help prisoners prepare for employment upon release. In addition to running the workshop and overseeing its daily operations, they will manage the partnership relationship and work within a commercial environment that demands a high level of specialist knowledge.

Responsibilities, Activities and Duties

The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

• Assess, train and evaluate skills of prisoners up to national qualification standards (NVQ) or other trade specific skills/learning, learnt from the commercial partner.
• Support and encourage prisoners in their learning by promoting the value of acquired skills and motivating them to engage in work activities that contribute to positive employment outcomes.
• Supervise and maintain discipline of prisoners within workshop/area of work, responsible for performance, motivation, discipline, appraisal and development of prisoners.
• Undertake regular training with commercial partner as required, delivering training and skills in the work of the specific commercial sector and identifying suitable qualifications to match work where possible.
• Maintain regular communications via radio in accordance with Local Security Strategy (LSS). Contribute to Health and Safety risk assessments relating to the workshop/work of area and specialist areas.
• Provide quality assurance against product specification, perform basic maintenance and service equipment as required by the commercial partner.
• Request materials and estimate usage in order to meet work targets, using requisite specialist knowledge of commercial production to make accurate requests and estimates.
• Responsible for day-to-day contract/partnership management with the commercial partner, communicating and liaising on orders and deliveries where necessary.
• Complete administration activities to support the smooth running of the workshop/ area including monitoring and assuring production levels for reporting to commercial partner.
• Work in a commercial workshop that requires specialist knowledge/expertise to complete production e.g. engineering, plastics injection moulding, operation of heavy and complex machinery.

An ability to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence through the medium of English or (where specified in Wales) Welsh.

Experience

• Must have relevant work experience in a relevant productive / commercial environment.
• Preferable for candidate to have some supervisory experience
• Should have experience of using industrial standard machinery and equipment in-line with requirements of commercial partner.
• Have or be willing to work towards the relevant skills/specialist knowledge related to production with the commercial partner.

Technical requirements

• Currently hold or be prepared to work towards Level 3 or equivalent in related subject.
• Undertake training in the specialism of the workshop/ commercial sector by the commercial partner and/or already be trained in the required specialism.
• Will need to be or must be willing to work towards being an NVQ assessor or equivalent.
