About the role
Principal Education is looking for Behaviour Mentors to work in schools, PRUs and alternative provision across Havering.
Havering has one of the fastest growing SEMH cohorts in London. The council’s own forecasts projected a 150% rise in children and young people with social, emotional and mental health needs over five years, the steepest growth of any need type in the borough. Those pupils are in classrooms now, and schools are short of the right adults to sit alongside them.
You do not need a teaching qualification. What matters is that you can stay calm with a young person who is not calm, and come back the next day.
The role
As a Behaviour Mentor you will work 1:1 or with very small groups of pupils who have significant behavioural, emotional and social needs. Some of that happens in the classroom, some of it happens in a corridor, an office or on a walk round the field. Many of the pupils you support will have SEMH needs, autism, ADHD or a history of exclusion.
You will build a relationship with the same young people week after week, spot what sets things off, and help them get back into learning. Behaviour Mentor roles are full time, Monday to Friday, term time only, because consistency is the whole point of the job.
What you MUST demonstrate
- Right to work in the UK
- The ability to stay calm and composed when a situation escalates
- Experience with challenging behaviour, from any setting, including youth work, sports coaching, care work or your own lived experience
- Patience, empathy and resilience
- Reliability, because the pupils notice when you are not there
- An enhanced DBS certificate registered with the Update Service, or willingness to complete a new application
- Overseas police clearance if you have lived abroad for 6 months or more in the last 5 years
- Living in or able to travel to Havering
Pay and benefits
- £110 to £130 per day, depending on experience
- Higher rates for long term Behaviour Mentor roles, aligned with school pay scales
- Weekly pay
- Free safeguarding and de escalation training
- A consultant who knows the schools and will be straight with you about each one
- A genuine route into permanent work, and into SEMH teaching or pastoral leadership if that is where you want to go
