Role: Electrical & Automation Engineer
Location: Edmonds Office, Burnaby, BC / Hybrid
Term: October 1, 2026 – September 30, 2027
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7.5 hours/day - in office 2 days per week, Wednesday and Thursday
Max T4 Rate: $93.22/
Max INC Rate: $112.80
Travel: Minimum 5 weeks per year to remote and off-grid facilities
About the Role
BC Hydro is seeking a Senior Electrical & Automation Engineer to join the Non-Integrated Areas (NIA) Planning & Strategy team based out of the Edmonds office in Burnaby. The NIA team is responsible for generation planning and asset management across 14 isolated microgrids serving primarily Indigenous communities. The portfolio includes 17 diesel generating stations and a run-of-river hydro facility, with battery energy storage and advanced microgrid control systems being introduced across the network.
This role will provide senior technical expertise across electrical, automation, protection and control systems, supporting both ongoing operations and future capital projects.
Key Responsibilities
• Act as Professional of Record or Owner’s Engineer for electrical, automation, protection and control disciplines
• Provide technical support for diesel generation, hydro generation and battery energy storage systems
• Design, program, troubleshoot and commission PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, protection relays, IEDs and microgrid controllers
• Work with systems from Allen Bradley, Siemens, Schneider, SEL and Wonderware
• Support generator controls, governors, instrumentation, switchgear, protection and communications systems
• Prepare technical documentation including specifications, control narratives, drawings, test procedures, commissioning procedures and operating/maintenance documentation
• Witness factory acceptance testing and oversee site installation and commissioning
• Work with electrical maintenance crews and technologists on repairs and re-commissioning of protection, control and automation equipment
• Support capital and maintenance planning
• Identify and resolve complex technical and field engineering issues
• Provide technical guidance to engineering teams, operations and senior management
• Use Microsoft Copilot and other AI tools to improve efficiency and innovation
Qualifications
• Degree in Electrical Engineering
• P.Eng. registered with Engineers & Geoscientists BC (EGBC) or another province
• Minimum 8 years of relevant engineering experience
• Strong technical knowledge of diesel and hydro-electric generation
• Experience with PLC/HMI/SCADA/IED systems, preferably Allen Bradley, Siemens, Schneider, SEL and/or Wonderware
• Familiarity with CAD systems, engineering drawings and industry design/analysis software
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Strong organizational, interpersonal and conflict-resolution skills
• Ability to work effectively with field crews, engineering teams and senior management
• Experience using Artificial Intelligence tools
Additional Requirements
• Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence
• Must have access to a sole practitioner or firm Permit to Practice with EGBC prior to starting the assignment
• Work will be completed under BC Hydro’s Professional Practice Management Plan and Quality Management requirements
• Familiarity with digital signing and sealing technology is an asset
