About the role

Senior or Principal Building Services Engineer Electrical

Employment type: Permanent
Sector: Infrastructure and Ministry of Justice buildings

We are recruiting Senior and Principal Building Services Engineers specialising in electrical engineering for a leading UK infrastructure consultancy.

This is an excellent opportunity to take a key role in the design and delivery of electrical building-services solutions across infrastructure and Ministry of Justice projects, including prisons and other secure operational facilities.

Depending on your experience, you will either work as a senior member of the engineering team or provide technical and team leadership across a portfolio of complex, multidisciplinary projects. You will deliver safe, practical and technically robust solutions while maintaining high standards of quality, cost and programme performance.

Key responsibilities
Produce technically sound electrical building-services designs that meet client requirements, relevant standards and industry best practice.
Design and coordinate systems including power distribution, lighting, emergency lighting, fire alarms, security systems, standby power and associated infrastructure.
Prepare and check calculations, drawings, specifications, reports and technical documentation.
Lead or support projects from initial survey and concept design through detailed design, construction support, commissioning and handover.
Coordinate electrical designs with mechanical, structural, architectural and other technical disciplines.
Undertake site visits, surveys, inspections and technical assessments.
Develop practical and compliant solutions for existing, refurbished and new-build facilities.
Identify design hazards and ensure appropriate controls are incorporated into project delivery.
Ensure compliance with Building Regulations, British Standards, CDM Regulations and relevant technical guidance.
Liaise with clients, contractors, suppliers, operational teams and other stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
Manage design quality, technical assurance and programme performance across multiple schemes.
Support delivery against agreed project budgets and commercial objectives.
Contribute to bids, fee proposals, framework opportunities and wider work-winning activity.
Share technical knowledge and support the development of junior engineers.

At Principal level, you will also:

Act as the technical lead and subject-matter expert for electrical building services.
Lead multidisciplinary design teams and manage technical interfaces.
Review and approve engineering deliverables.
Provide authoritative technical advice to clients, operational managers, suppliers and project teams.
Take responsibility for successful project delivery across quality, programme, risk and budget.
Support resource planning and workload allocation across the engineering team.
Mentor, coach and professionally develop engineers and technicians.
Undertake people-management responsibilities where required.
Develop client relationships and support strategic business growth.
About you

You will have:

A degree, HNC or HND in Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or a related discipline.
Substantial experience designing electrical building-services systems.
A strong understanding of electrical engineering theory and its practical application.
Experience producing and checking electrical calculations, specifications, drawings and technical reports.
Knowledge of power distribution, lighting, fire alarms, security systems and associated building infrastructure.
Detailed knowledge of Building Regulations, British Standards and relevant electrical design guidance.
Experience working within multidisciplinary design and project teams.
A good understanding of CDM Regulations, design risk management and health and safety responsibilities.
Experience using electrical design, modelling and calculation software.
Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Revit and BIM-led design processes.
Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills.
Commercial awareness and an understanding of project budgets, programmes and delivery requirements.
The ability to manage competing priorities across multiple projects.

For Principal-level consideration, you should also demonstrate:

Chartered Engineer status or experience operating at an equivalent professional level.
Membership of an appropriate professional institution such as CIBSE or the IET.
Extensive experience leading electrical building-services design on complex projects.
Experience managing engineers, technicians and multidisciplinary project teams.
Responsibility for technical assurance, design reviews and approval of engineering deliverables.
Strong client-management and presentation skills.
Experience supporting project financial performance, bids and work-winning activities.
The ability to lead projects across multiple locations or workstreams.
Secure and operational building experience

Previous experience delivering projects within prisons, courts, Ministry of Justice buildings or other secure public-sector environments would be highly advantageous.

Applications are also welcomed from engineers with transferable experience across defence, education, healthcare, rail, transport, government buildings and other complex or operationally sensitive estates.

You should understand the challenges associated with delivering electrical engineering work in occupied and secure environments, including:

Maintaining safety, security and continuity of essential services.
Planning surveys, isolations and installation work around live operations.
Coordinating access with operational and security teams.
Designing around existing services and incomplete asset information.
Managing phased delivery, temporary supplies and restricted working periods.
Producing resilient, maintainable and operationally practical solutions.
Maintaining robust technical assurance and project documentation.

The ability to obtain the necessary security and Ministry of Justice vetting will be required.

Desirable experience
Previous employment within a building-services consultancy.
Justice, prison, court or wider government-estate experience.
Experience acting as Principal Designer.
Delivery of large-scale infrastructure or complex building projects.
Refurbishment and upgrade projects within occupied buildings.
Standby generation, uninterruptible power supplies or resilient electrical infrastructure.
Digital engineering and BIM-led project delivery.
Supporting bids, fee proposals and business-development activity.
A valid CSCS card.
What is offered
A permanent opportunity within a growing infrastructure and secure-buildings portfolio.
Competitive salary and benefits package.
Flexible working arrangements.
Structured professional development and support toward Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status.
Opportunities to lead technically challenging and nationally important projects.
Clear progression at both Senior and Principal Engineer level.
A collaborative, multidisciplinary working environment.

Applications are welcomed from suitably qualified candidates regardless of background. Reasonable adjustments can be provided throughout the recruitment process.
