About the role

Purpose: To support pupils’ learning, progress and wellbeing both in class and across the school, working under the direction of class teachers and the SENCo to deliver high-quality, inclusive provision.

Reporting to: Class Teacher / SENCo

Support for pupils:

  • Provide high-quality, evidence-informed support for pupils’ learning and personal development in whole-class, small-group and 1:1 settings, under the direction of the class teacher and SENCo.

  • Implement individual provision as set out in EHCPs, individual plans, behaviour plans and the graduated approach, adapting resources and scaffolds to meet pupils’ needs.

  • Promote pupils’ independence, resilience and social inclusion; support social, emotional and mental health needs and escalate safeguarding or welfare concerns immediately to the DSL/SENCo.

  • Encourage and supervise pupils at breaktimes, lunchtime and during school activities, promoting safe play and positive behaviour.

Support for teaching and learning:

  • Work with class teachers to plan, prepare and deliver differentiated learning activities that align with the curriculum and pupils’ targets.

  • Deliver evidence-based, structured interventions where trained to do so, and provide timely, objective feedback to teachers on pupils’ progress and barriers to learning.

  • Use assessment information, observation and school records to monitor, record and report on pupil progress and attainment; contribute to review meetings (e.g. termly SEND reviews, Pupil Progress) as required.

  • Support classroom organisation and resource management to maintain a stimulating, safe and inclusive environment.

  • Share relevant information with colleagues, parents and external professionals to ensure coordinated support; attend and contribute to meetings (SEN reviews, EHCP annual reviews, multi-agency meetings) when required.

  • Work closely with the SENCo and other specialists (e.g. Educational Psychologist, SALT, OT) to implement and review agreed strategies and outcomes.

General Requirements:

  • Take responsibility for personal professional development; participate in the school’s appraisal cycle and access training identified by the SENCo/line manager

  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and confidentiality in line with school policy and data protection requirements.

  • Promote and model the school’s behaviour policy, applying positive behaviour management strategies consistently.

  • Work in line with statutory safeguarding guidance (Keeping Children Safe in Education) and the school’s safeguarding and child protection policies

  • Support whole-school initiatives and work flexibly across different classes, year groups and school sites as required by school need.

  • Carry out other duties commensurate with the role as directed by the Headteacher or line manager.
