Our opportunity for you

We have a vacancy for a College Counsellor. Reporting directly to the Designated Safeguarding Lead and Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead, the key role of the Student Counsellor is to provide high quality counselling service to students who may be experiencing a wide range of emotional problems. The Counsellor will work closely with the Designated Safeguarding Lead, Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead and the pastoral team to maintain the highest standards of welfare for allstudents.

Contract: Full-time, term time only

Working hours: Monday - Thursday 8.15am - 4.30pm and Friday 8.15am - 3.30pm

Start date: ASAP

Salary: Dependent upon experience plus daily meal allowance

Job description

Duties of role will include being able:

To offer counselling and support to students for a range of issues including but not exclusive to academic barriers, difficulties with peers, behavioural challenges, emotional issues arising from parental separation and divorce, low mood, bereavement, relationships with parents, gender and sexuality, anxiety, self-harm, issue with body image or disordered eating and attendance problems.

To deliver therapeutic group sessions on issues such as conflict resolution, stress reduction, bereavement, anxiety, confidence building and other issues that are presented by groups of students in College.

To conduct student assessments using tools such as RCADs and Adolescent Wellbeing Scale to identify need.

To train student Peer Mentors and manage the allocation and supervision of peer mentors and mentees.

To appoint and manage volunteer counsellors who provide 1:1 therapeutic support to students aged 16 and over.

To oversee the caseload for the Creative Therapy sessions that are delivered by an external provider.

To liaise with the school’s Executive Team, Designated Safeguarding Lead and deputies, Heads of Year and their deputies, Attendance Manager, and Personal Tutors where necessary.

To liaise with parents/carers and other professionals, such as Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS), COMPASS Changing Lives, Build Sound Minds (Action for Children), School Health, GPs, when necessary.

To maintain confidentiality (except in those circumstances, in line with BACP practice, where this should be breached).

To perform duties within the codes of practice and ethics recommended by the BACP / UKCP or equivalent organisation.

To work within an informed system of referral in order that students may access the services offered.

To keep suitable case records on each counselling/group session in a secure place, in accordance with the Data Protection Act.

To provide regular audit information such as numbers and profile of students accessing the service, types of issues facing the students and impact of accessing the service on the students to the Executive Team

To have a thorough and up to date knowledge of mental health provision locally and nationally.

To organise whole school activities and events such as World Mental Health Day to raise awareness about mental health and to promote emotional wellbeing.

Periodically to inform and promote the student support services in gatherings and by way of noticeboards/displays.

To attend multi-agency and/or professionals' meetings, putting in place any recommendation suggested and liaising with other members of the pastoral team.

To attend supervision with a suitably qualified supervisor, funded by LFCT.

All staff have a responsibility to ensure that the College’s Safeguarding Policy is adhered to and concerns are raised in accordance with the policy.

To implement a robust system of tracking and measuring therapeutic outcomes and student wellbeing indicators, including but not limited to, attainment, attendance and progress.

Any other appropriate duties and responsibilities relevant to the post as directed by the Chief Executive Officer, Principal, Vice Principals, or Assistant Principals.
