Job summary

HMLR are recruiting for a Senior Test Engineer (performance testing) to join our Transformation and Technology team to help us achieve this.
HM Land Registry's existing software systems and services form part of the critical national infrastructure, safeguarding land and property ownership valued at £8 trillion. This enables over £1 trillion worth of personal and commercial lending to be secured against property across England and Wales.
Job description
In the role of Senior Test Engineer (performance testing), your main duties will consist of:
- Advocate best practice leading through practical examples and guidance
- Define and maintain performance test strategy, plan and the approaches
- Perform in depth reviews reporting quality improvements and successes
- Establish performance testing standards, processes and governance
- Develop reusable frameworks and automation assets
- Ensure performance testing is integrated into delivery plans
- Provide leadership and direction to performance testers and engineers
- Validate requirements against user demand and expected workload
- Innovate and generate tooling to assist testing tasks and potential future issues
- Ensure clear acceptance criteria are agreed
- Define performance test approaches for programmes and projects
- Develop the scripts, parameterize, correlate, and maintain reusable performance test scripts using LoadRunner
- Design realistic user journeys and business workload models aligned with production usage patterns to ensure appropriate workload modelling
- Conduct Load, Stress, Spike, Endurance (Soak), Volume, Scalability, and Capacity Testing
- Work with business and technical stakeholders to define measurable NFR’s
- Analyse performance test results & Utilize APM and observability tools such as OpenShift, Grafana, and Cloudwatch.
- Monitor application health metrics including response times, throughput, CPU utilization, memory consumption, disk I/O, thread counts, and network latency.
- Provide tuning recommendations for application code, JVM, middleware, databases, caching, and infrastructure components.
- Collaborate with developers and architects to optimize system performance.
This role may involve occasional travel which may include stays away from home.
This role may include weekend working to provide support to live assurance testing during deployment to Production.
Person specification
To be successful in this role, you will hold the following:
- ISTQB Foundation in Software Testing
- Degree level or equivalent in Computing
You will have practitioner level experience of automated testing and automated test tools, as well as an understanding of environment needs and capabilities. You will be a practitioner in technical analysis and be able to absorb large amounts of conflicting information to determine solutions.
You will have practitioner level experience of automated performance testing and automated test tools, as well as be a practitioner in understanding environment needs and capabilities.
You must also be a practitioner in technical analysis, and be able to absorb large amounts of conflicting information to determine solutions.
You must be a practitioner in non-functioning tests and have experience in training and mentoring technical test skills.
You must be a practitioner in technical breadth over a range of tools and techniques and have strong analytical and troubleshooting skills. You must also have performance tuning and root cause analysis expertise.
You must be able to collaborate with development, infrastructure, operations, architecture, and business teams.
HMLR expect everyone to spend at least 60% of their working time in the office.
