Our client is seeking a Principal Embedded Software Engineer to join its engineering team, developing low-level embedded software for electrification applications including battery management, power conversion and electric vehicle control systems. This Contract role offers the opportunity to provide technical leadership while delivering robust software for high-integrity, real-time systems.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the design, implementation and testing of embedded software platforms for real-time microcontroller systems
Develop low-level and application-level software using C, C++ and assembly
Design modular, scalable and reusable software components, including device drivers, communication stacks and hardware abstraction layers
Work with CAN, LIN, SPI, I2C, UART and Ethernet communications, as well as middleware, bootloaders and firmware update mechanisms
Translate system-level requirements into software specifications and maintain architecture and design documentation
Plan and execute unit, integration and system-level testing, using static and dynamic analysis tools to support software quality
Support compliance with relevant standards, including MISRA-C, CERT C, ISO 26262 and ASPICE
Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, systems, validation and manufacturing teams to support hardware integration, debugging and successful project delivery
Job Requirements:
Degree or equivalent qualification in software engineering, electronic engineering or a related discipline
Significant experience in embedded software design, implementation, validation and debugging for hard real-time systems
Advanced programming skills in embedded C and C++, with knowledge of assembly for microcontroller platforms
Experience with software requirements, technical specifications, test documentation, version control and change management
Understanding of software development tools, CI/CD pipelines and configuration management, including platforms such as Bitbucket, Jenkins or GitLab CI
Knowledge of CAN-based tools such as INCA, CANape or CANalyzer, together with experience of complex high- and low-voltage electrical systems
Understanding of functional safety, cyber security and industry standards for high-integrity control systems
Excellent problem-solving, analytical, communication and technical documentation skills, with a quality-focused and collaborative approach
Desirable Experience:
Experience developing high-integrity systems within the automotive, marine, energy storage or aerospace sectors
Knowledge of battery management systems and battery control applications
Experience with AC/DC, DC/AC and DC/DC power conversion systems and their control
Understanding of Software FMEA, safety analysis and system-level engineering trade-offs
