About the role

We are seeking to appoint a Group Leader to lead a Bristol-based Electrical, Control, Instrumentation and Security team.

This role combines technical leadership, project delivery, people management, and business growth responsibilities. The successful candidate will lead the delivery of complex engineering projects, often within highly regulated and safety-critical environments. Effective stakeholder management, communication, and collaboration across multidisciplinary teams are essential to ensure successful project outcomes and client satisfaction.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will possess a strong technical project delivery background with experience in several of the following areas:

  • Leading Control & Instrumentation (C&I) projects from concept design through to commissioning.
  • Designing novel process control systems, including associated safety systems.
  • Demonstrating a strong understanding of Operational Technology (OT) Cyber Security standards, ideally supported by ISA/IEC or GISP certification.
  • Managing the production, verification and approval of electrical reports, specifications and detailed design documentation.
  • Leading project teams to deliver high-quality outputs within agreed cost, schedule and performance constraints.
  • Acting as a client-facing technical lead, developing requirements, managing stakeholder relationships, negotiating agreements, reporting progress, and managing project risks.

Qualifications & Experience

Applicants should ideally possess:

  • MEng degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering or equivalent.
  • Strong practical knowledge of process control systems.
  • Solid understanding of EC&I documentation, including:
    • Single Line Diagrams (SLDs)
    • Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
    • Block Cable Diagrams (BCDs)
    • Electrical schematics
  • Extensive experience developing solutions for safety-critical systems in accordance with standards such as:
    • IEC 61513
    • IEC 61508
    • IEC 61511
    • ISO 13849
    • DO-178
    • DO-254
  • Experience mentoring and developing engineers.
  • Proven technical leadership within multidisciplinary engineering projects.
  • Significant experience operating within a consultancy or engineering services environment.
  • Previous supervisory and/or line management experience.
  • Knowledge of recognised project management methodologies and frameworks.

Desirable Experience

  • Siemens TIA Portal
  • Pilz PAS4000
  • Rockwell Studio 5000 / Studio Logix

Additional Qualifications & Certifications

  • Functional Safety certification or accreditation (e.g. TÜV Functional Safety Professional).
  • Cyber Security certification (e.g. ISA/IEC 62443, GIAC).
  • Chartered Engineer status (CEng).

Regulatory & Industry Engagement

  • Experience engaging with regulators and governing bodies such as:
    • Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR)
    • Defence Maritime Regulator (DMR)
    • Civil Aviation Authority (CAA)
    • Military Aviation Authority (MAA)
    • Ofgem
    • Office of Rail and Road (ORR)

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical, operational and people leadership for the EC&I&S team.
  • Support business growth through client engagement, bid support and capability development.
  • Ensure the successful delivery of projects within safety, quality, cost and schedule requirements.
  • Develop and mentor engineers, supporting professional development and succession planning.
  • Foster effective collaboration across multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Maintain high standards of engineering governance, compliance and technical excellence.
