Job description

Protect the UK's maritime transport network and help keep the public safe. As a Maritime Security Compliance Inspector, you will play a vital role in monitoring and assessing compliance with maritime security regulations across the UK. Working within the Department for Transport's Maritime Security Division, you will contribute to the Government's counter-terrorism strategy, partnering with industry, law enforcement and government colleagues to help protect port facilities, transport workers and the travelling public while maintaining confidence in the UK's maritime sector.

Your responsibilities will include, but aren’t limited to:

• Undertake close observations, inspections, audits and tests across the UK as part of a risk-based programme of compliance activity to assess industry compliance with security requirements.
• In the event of less than full compliance with the guidance, seek swift and sustainable rectification..
• Ensure accurate, succinct and focussed information about findings of compliance activity are entered onto the relevant database.
• Liaise with industry representatives on site visits to conduct compliance activities in an effective, professional and consistent manner.
• Lead some inspections with colleagues; participate in others with colleagues and attend others in a singleton capacity.
• Support policy colleagues to deliver key areas of work; this could include drafting reports, providing briefing, attending meetings.
• Support the Department’s response in the event of a critical incident, in particular involving maritime security. This could include a range of activities such as working in response cells, updating SitReps, engaging with cross Government and external partners. The response may involve out of hours working.

To be successful in this role you will need to have the following experience:

• Experience working in compliance or protective security environments, delivering results under pressure and to tight deadlines.
• Strong communication, stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with the ability to produce clear and accurate reports.
• Able to adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment and hold a valid UK Driving Licence.

Working hours, office attendance and travel requirements

Full time roles consist of 37 hours per week.

Whilst we welcome applications from those looking to work with us on a part time basis, there is a business requirement for the successful candidate to be able to work at least 30 hours per week.

This role is suitable for hybrid working, which is a non-contractual arrangement where a combination of workplace and home-based working can be accommodated subject to business requirements.

The expectation at present is a minimum of 60% of your working time a month will be spent at either your designated workplace (one of the locations cited in the advert) or, when required for business reasons, in another office/work location/visiting stakeholders. Your designated workplace will be your contractual place of work. There may be occasions where you are required to attend above the minimum expectation.

This role requires regular travel across the UK, averaging three days per week and including overnight stays, with occasional overseas travel. The successful candidate will be flexible to work early mornings, evenings and weekends when required, with TOIL or overtime available, and willing to provide out-of-hours support on a best endeavours basis in response to security-related incidents and events.
