As a Senior Infrastructure Engineer for DWP’s Specialist Devices team, you will be a member of a highly motivated team that strives for excellence, delivering world class specialist devices and services for DWP colleagues.
Specialist Devices have responsibility for macOS and the physical and virtual environments/solutions for our 3,500 Engineering users, and 4,500 customer computers. We also have a remit to look at emerging alternative device solutions for particular use cases which provides the team with a varied and interesting workload, often at the forefront of new technology.
We are a multi-disciplinary team, who work closely together to identify and assess options; make recommendations regarding solutions; then design and implement solutions, all based on our users’ requirements. You will also be part of the product leadership team.
Our end-to-end product ownership means we value our users and continually assess the service, looking for improvements we can put in place for them to improve their experience of the product.
You will be skilled practitioner and a role model in Infrastructure solutions, responsible for ensuring best practices are adhered to across the department and guiding teams on how to deliver quality Infrastructure products.
Job description
- Design and deliver infrastructure services in collaboration with Architecture teams, ensuring alignment with engineering principles, standards and best practice.
- Take accountability for infrastructure solutions, ensuring operational stability, robustness, resilience, availability and service quality.
- Provide technical leadership across a multidisciplinary team, specialising in macOS, Jamf and ChromeOS technologies while driving continuous improvement and the adoption of emerging technologies.
- Support and enhance the Engineering Platform used by approximately 3,500 colleagues to develop and test digital solutions across DWP.
- Maintain and develop Creative Device services that enable media and video professionals to create and deliver departmental campaigns.
- Deliver infrastructure services and data insight capabilities that enhance the Department's digital experience and support informed decision-making.
- Lead and support the replacement of approximately 4,500 citizen-facing devices across more than 600 sites, helping to modernise technology and improve digital services for citizens nationwide.

- Significant experience of challenging and influencing suppliers and peers on technology choices and design patterns, providing alternative recommendations to support effective decision making.
- Significant experience of providing technical leadership, coaching and mentoring junior Infrastructure Engineers, developing team capability and creating a culture of continuous learning, collaboration and high performance.

Hybrid Working
This role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in their DWP office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your office will be your contractual place of work.
If a hybrid working arrangement is suitable for the role and for you, you will normally be required to spend a minimum of 60% of your contracted working hours from your DWP office.

Salary Information
Pay for this role is from £57,946 to £73,205.
The maximum salary for the grade is £68,205, however a Digital Allowance of up to £5,000 per annum is available for exceptional candidates. Digital Allowance is non-salary, and non-pensionable, and is classed as a temporary allowance. It is reviewed annually where it could be retained, amended, or removed.
Our offer to successful candidates will be based on an assessment of your skills and experience as demonstrated at interview.
Existing Civil Servants who secure a new role on lateral transfer will maintain their current substantive salary.
Civil Servants who gain promotion will move to the bottom of the grade pay scale or receive a 10% increase applied to their current substantive salary, whichever is greater.
Any temporary allowances that you are currently in receipt of will not form part of the calculation to determine your pay. Any allowances that are in payment will cease when you move into your new role.
